The new hours mean that entries at the Table Mountain, Constantia, and Silvermine gates will shut down between 5:00 PM and 5:30 PM depending on location. Park officials said the shift reflects safety concerns and reduced staff availability during the June-to-August period.
Visitor access will end thirty minutes earlier than last year's schedule at the Upper Cableway station, where foot traffic drops sharply after 4:00 PM during winter. Officials estimated that approximately 340,000 visitors use the park between June and August annually, making it the second-busiest season after summer.
Why the Park Is Adjusting Access Now
SANParks, the government body managing the park, cited two primary reasons for the change. First, early sunsets during South Africa's winter create hazardous conditions on steeper trails after 5:00 PM. Second, fewer rangers patrol the perimeter during this period due to budget reallocation cycles that run July through June.
